what is colic and does my baby have it?

It seems like you can't turn a corner these days without bumping into this term. It may be one of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions of all newborn babies. Why? Because it's hard figuring out what is wrong with a fussy baby.

In fact I had friend (granted she doesn't have kids) once suggest to me that my fussy 6 mo old baby might be suffering from colic. I had to chuckle. I knew that it was probably teething making my baby fussy at 6 mo. and not colic, but it made me realize that the "great unknown" was having this backlash of over diagnosis. And as a new parent you certainly don't want to be carrying around any unnecessary worry about something your baby may not even have. You have your hands full worrying about other things at this point.

Plus if your baby does indeed have colic, you don't want their condition to be overlooked or downplayed because it has become a common term for normal fussiness. You, oh parent of a colicky newborn, know the reality of those cry-all-night marathons.

So, to set your mind as ease, or to determine once and for all if your baby has colic, take a look at these articles from the desktop of Elizabeth Pantley (NW mom, nationally acclaimed author and baby expert).
