how do I choose a baby carrier?

Choosing a baby carrier has part to do with the age of your baby (NB, infant, toddler), your own personal style (funky, traditional, earthy), your lifestyle (at home, on the go, active etc.), what your primary uses of it will be (for walks, for nursing, to wear baby down to sleep, etc.) and any physical complications you may need to take into consideration (like a bad back, or shoulder trouble).

Some carriers have more of a learning curve than others. Slings tend to be a quick on-and-off type of carrier, ideal for the mom who nurses baby and/or wears them down to sleep and then needs to transition baby out without waking them up. They are great from NB to toddler, and the positions change according to age.

A stretchy wrap like a Moby Wrap tends to work well for moms who will be wearing their NB or infant for extended periods of time and who may need dual shoulder support (because of back or shoulder problems). Though as baby gets older, they may stretch too much and not be as comfortable as baby gets heavier and larger.

Asian inspired carriers like the BabyHawk Mei Tai work phenomenally from NB to toddler with minimal stretch. They can be easier to put on than a wrap, though by the time baby is a toddler (and quite heavy) you may prefer the support of a carrier like the ERGO Baby Carrier which features structured clips and straps.
